Battle of Kings MountainFrom the Meet Director – Walter Siegenthaler:

This was the first time we used the new map and what a difference it is. The new map has a lot more details and the vegetation is now mapped correctly. Now we know how dense the forest is on any given leg. At this point we only have about ¼ of the size the old map was field checked, with another ¼ to be added soon. We do have the LiDAR contours of the whole park, so that we can add to the new map.
I laid out the courses to be all on the newly field checked portion of the map so that everybody could enjoy the new art work. Most of the Red course was designed by Bob Burg, the mapper of the new map, however, I had to make some changes since we were not allowed to use the area directly south of the visitor center due to a horse race that started in the State Park but used the trails in the southern part of the Military Park.
The weather was quite a challenge for the preparation of the event, whenever I had time to go out to the park there was rain, so I ended up checking the control locations in the rain and setting out the controls in even more rain. But at least for the event itself there was no rain and we even had quite some sunshine, however, the ground was still very wet and slippery. The good thing is that there were no injuries reported, even though there must have been quite some falls out there on the steep hillsides.
Turnout was a bit lighter than other years, probably due to the bad weather leading up to the event. It appears that some participants brought out the old maps to avoid paying the entrance fee, very disappointing to see that a leader teaches the young people to cheat. It was easy to spot since the old maps were doubled the size we used for this event and of course did not have the new information we added since last year. Circumventing the registration process voids any insurance coverage which places participants at risk and deprives the COK revenue needed to put on events.
We got a lot of positive feedback, it seems that everybody was happy with the new map and the courses.
A big thank you to the helpers: My wife Lissa for handling start and finish all day, Dan Davis and James Sisk for instructions and control pickup, David Alexander set up and instructions and Bill Ketring for instructions. Without volunteers like them the event could not happen, why don’t you volunteer to help next time, no experience needed, we will train you. Please let us know when you can help.
