Kings Mountain State Park (Lake Crawford)
January 8, 2022 - 10:00 to 12:00Price: $10.00
I think we can all agree that Lake Crawford 2022 was a bit on the cold side (editor’s note: a bit !?!). The weather contributed to a number of no-shows. However, for those running the courses, it wasn’t too bad. For those of us manning the check-in location, a nice roaring fire would have been nice….. All went well though and I believe most had a good time.
This was the first Lake Crawford meet where the eastern section of the new map was used. This time of year, this area is very open and terrain reading is optimized. The Red and Green courses were somewhat on the short side as I had to make some modifications while doing the field checking and, frankly, ran out of daylight and wasn’t able to include a couple of additional controls that I had planned.
We were able to have separate COK and JROTC check-in points as well as separate Start & Finish locations. This helped spread out the crowd and made administration easier.
Special thanks goes to Major Ervin Purvis and his JROTC cadets from Myers Park High School in Charlotte for running the JROTC side of the event. They also were a big help in picking up controls after all runners were in.
Speaking of picking up controls at the end of the meet, Meet Directors are especially appreciative of help with this. Being able to get all the controls picked up on the day of the event and not having to return to the park to get this done is something we are grateful for. I got tremendous help with this this year.
In addition to hanging the White course controls early Saturday morning and then running the Red course, Walter Siegenthaler stayed around to help with pick-up. James Sisk also stayed all day helping with check-in and then control pick-up. Sam Andrew and Dave also stayed around after their run to help out. Lew Tager made a special trip over to help and Rick Vogel brought a crew up from the Greenville, SC area to help. They then recruited Anita Edgemon to join in. This is the biggest pick-up support I’ve had in 25 years of being a Meet Director and I really enjoyed having there contribution.
Once again, a thank you to my wife Jeannette for running the COK side of the check-in plus spending hours in the woods helping me field check and hang controls.
