McDowell Nature Preserve & Park
November 2, 2024 - 10:00 to 12:00
Price: $10.00
What a delightfully perfect autumn day to enjoy the great outdoors in the central Piedmont region of these United States! It was good to finally get the ’24/’25 orienteering season started after canceling last month’s event due to park closures (our hearts go out to our fellow citizens affected by Hurricane Helene – still in need of charity – click here to give).
Participants were treated to several expertly designed courses by a world recognized orienteering champ – Sergei Zhyk. We’re very fortunate (and thankful) for Sergei’s contribution to the COK and look forward to many more innovative courses from him. Perhaps as a testament to his skill as a course designer – there were very few Did Not Finish (DNF) runners!
Thanks and kudos for volunteering go out to: Bill Ketring (training newbies & time keeping); Sergei (course design & control placement/pickup); David A. / Walter S. /Kris & Jennifer D. (control pickup); and of course to the awesome customer-focused staff of the Char-Meck Parks n’ Rec department (their support of orienteering in our city is commendable).
Results are posted below in the chart with 3 special side notes:
Note 1 – Two exceptional young men from Crest High School Air Force JROTC were navigating their course when they came upon another participant experiencing a cardiac incident (he was medevac’d from McDowell to the hospital and is reported as recovered). They rendered aid and assisted first responders to the victim (off trail in the park). Because of their auspicious conduct – they did not finish the course; but they did earn the admiration & respect of those who witnessed their courtesy & concern.
Note 2 – Anita is a good, long-time friend of the COK; but started out on her course at the very last moment. Event managers may sometimes let folks go out after 12PM; but it’s actually quite rare. We have to start picking up controls around 2-to-2:30PM which means some people may still be out on their course – but the controls have been picked up! Please be mindful of this when contemplating a last minute departure…..
Note 3 – Stephen is a long-time friend of the club and is using COK events to train for Adventure Racing competition. He’s not interested in his time; but rather in honing his navigational skills. He knew event managers have to keep tabs on everyone out there for safety purposes – so, he checked out and in with the time keeper. This is fine and we’re grateful to Stephen for making sure he let the time keeper know of his whereabouts.
