Kings Mountain National Military Park, March 7
March 7 - 09:30 to 11:30
Price: $10.00Event Navigation
Another great weekend of orienteering took place at Kings Mountain National Military Park! As in the last few years, due to the limited parking available at this park, we had to limit map sales to make sure there was enough parking for regular (non-orienteering) visitors as well. Not surprisingly, the Saturday event sold out, and we had a good turnout on Sunday as well.
We had a little light rain both days, but it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants, and everybody enjoyed the nice warm temperatures.
The devastation from Hurricane Helene is still very visible in this park, as there were many branches and trees to climb over or go around. I heard quite a few comments about the tough going in some areas. The park is planning to do some prescribed burning north of the battleground in the next few weeks — we will see if this will make the woods more runnable for next year.
I had some great help both days to run the event. On Saturday, Kyle McAndrew, Dan Davis, my wife Lissa and her friend Kristin were running the COK side of check-in, start and finish, and the Providence High School cadets were running the JROTC side of the event. Our club president was busy talking to people about signing up for our newly established club membership.
Sue Ann Decker and James Sisk were helping on Sunday to run the COK side and Eric Pratt and his cadets from Saint Stephens High School handled the JROTC side.
Picking up the controls at the end of the day is always quite a task, but with the help of Sue Ann Decker, Anita Edgemon, Matt Getz, Jim Hall and Lew Tager, we had all the controls retrieved. The modules were switched to Daylight Savings Time and then were all packed away by 3:30pm.
Thank you volunteers, y’all did a great job!
